The New Bulova Tribute to Manchester United
Manchester
United was started by a group of railway workers as the Newton Health
LYR Football Club in 1878. The original team played most of their
matches in conspicuous green and gold jerseys, which is why today many
fans can be seen wearing green and gold scarves at Old Trafford – the home stadium of Manchester United. In 1902, the club was renamed to Manchester United, and their colors changed to the more recognizable red, black, and white.
The reason for the popularity of the green and gold color scheme today
is that many of the club's most ardent fans objected to the club's
purchase in 2005 by billionaire Malcolm Glazer, who died on May 28,
2014.
Bulova makes this model in stainless steel with a case diameter of 42.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm.
The brown strap is made from vintage inspired leather, which was the
original material used in the creation of footballs during the era
marking the beginning of the club. Securing the strap is a classic tang type buckle also made from stainless steel. The cushion shaped case is a very nice touch and it succeeds in giving the watch its desired retro aesthetic. The prominent push/pull, textured crown is distantly flanked by two chronograph pushpieces at 2 and 4. The circular, stationary bezel is fluted, which sets this watch apart. Water resistance comes in at 100 meters (10 ATM) for this timepiece.
The black dial represents a veritable smorgasbord of trivia about the club and its decorated history. The highlighted minute markers at 7, and 9-10 honor the 'United Trinity' of Best, Law, and Charlton. At the minute marker of 18 lies the year of the club's formation – 1878 in the original green and gold colors. This is really clever as even the 78 is also 18 as in 60+18=78.
The minute marker of 23 is in grey as it represents the year 1958 where
many players of the club died in a plane crash (1+9+5+8=23). The red twenty minute marker acknowledges the number of titles that the club has won – a number that is currently unsurpassed. The railroad minute track on the dial credits the original railroad workers who formed the club.
There is a highlighted railroad section between the 0 and 18 minute
markers that signify the importance of the Lancashire and Yorkshire
railroad that helped in making Manchester the first industrialized city
in the world.
The dial also carries a large red hour marker Arabic numeral 7 paying
tribute to some of the best players in the club's history that have worn
that number on their shirt. At the 6 position is the continuous seconds counter, which is also home to a date aperture. The counter at 9 reveals the chronograph minutes and is emblazoned with the iconic Manchester United logo. The chronograph hours, which extend to 10 hours can be found at 3 o'clock. The chrono-seconds are indicated using a central, red-tipped seconds hand. The hours and minutes hands are sword shaped and use lume for readability at night.
Powering this watch is a ultra-high frequency movement vibrating at 282kHz. This is eight times the rate as conventional quartz watches resulting in unparalleled accuracy. The warranty on this model is for a period of 3 years. This watch is just well done in all respects. It is not often that a co-branded watch comes out this well.
